GitHub experienced a major disruption affecting the Opus 4.8 model in Copilot products and IDE surfaces on June 16, 2026, between 17:20 UTC and 18:15 UTC. The incident has been fully resolved.

GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered code completion service used by millions of developers and organizations. The company, owned by Microsoft, offers version control and development collaboration tools alongside its AI coding assistant.

The degradation stemmed from an issue with an upstream model provider. During the 55-minute window, some requests to the Opus 4.8 model failed or errored, while other Copilot models remained unaffected. GitHub recommended users select alternative models or use the 'Auto' setting as a workaround. The upstream provider resolved the underlying issue, and GitHub confirmed normal success rates have returned.
